Adventures in Parenting - Colorful Language?
Today my 4-year-old daughter was sitting on the toilet when she nonchalantly asked me, “Mommy, do we have an ass in us?” I asked her to repeat what she said and she did. “An ass is another word for a donkey,” I replied. “Where did you hear that word?”
“Lily told me she was going to beat my ass.” She said, innocently. Swallowing the urge to laugh, I explained to her that she was only supposed to use the word “ass” when referring to a donkey but there is another way to use it that isn’t nice. She asked me if she should tell Lily’s mom the next time she tells her she’s going to beat her ass. I told her that would be a good idea. (Lily is my babysitter/friend’s daughter that she plays with twice a week). When my husband got home, I shared the story with him and we both got a good laugh. The only thing I’m wondering now is, who at the babysitter’s house was going to get an ass beating? She had to learn the expression somehwere, right?
