Too Much TV?

Published by mombloggerj at 8:48 am under Parenting Edit This

How many of you feel like your kids watch too much TV?  I guess what I’m trying to do by asking this question is to gauge just how I rate on the lax mommy scale.  When I’m on top of my game, we try to keep the TV off all day long on days we’re home.  We only turn it on after my husband gets home and then our daughter watches Noggin or other educational shows.  Unfortunately, when I’m busy with a deadline, really exhausted or caught up working on a project, I am guilty of using television as a babysitter.  We are very selective about what she gets to watch, only things that have some kind of educational value, but on the days when I’m really busy, she may get 3-4 hours of TV time during the day, then another hour or two at night.  At my house, we’ve come to view it as a necessary evil but is it?  For example, today I decided that even though I have a lot to do, we’re leaving the TV off.  She is sitting in an office chair opposite me right now drawing on her Magna Doodle.  That’s a worthy activity right?  Sometimes I feel like parenting is all a grand experiment anyway and we’re lucky if we don’t turn our little ones into disfunctional couch potatoes with bad habits.  If you have opinions, I welcome them, just leave a comment!

On days when I have a lot of work to do my kids will sometimes get a few hours of TV, but like you it’s Noggin or PBS. I work right next to them and still interact with them so I don’t think it’s too terrible. I always follow a long session of TV with something fun, like a trip to the zoo or something else that they’ll get a kick out of.

It does seem like a necessity some days. I try to give my daughter face time afterwards, too. Thanks for the comment!
